Here’s what my Uncle Malcolm had to say about the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit comes to stay.
Not as in the Old Testament when the Holy Spirit came for a period on people.
We cannot receive more of the Holy Spirit than we did at conversion, for the Holy Spirit is a person.
The new life is free from sin.
But this gift is contained in earthen vessels and we are not taken away from the presence of sin.
When a Christian person sins it is the old man in him, not the new nature.
The new life cannot be improved on.
The old life cannot be improved.
It is capable of no good thing.
This is a conflict between the two natures.
Ephesians 5.17 Means that because of this conflict we cannot always do the right, but it also means that because of the efforts of the Holy Spirit we do not do what we, as the old man, want to do.
The fullness of the Holy Spirit is the realisation that we can live the Christian life with victory as the habit of life, not defeat.
It is not a further gift of the spirit – we receive the Spirit in all its fullness at conversion.
We must reckon the Old Nature as dead. “Make no provision for the Old Nature. But make provision for the New Life.”
Yield to the Holy Spirit. We cannot have more of Him, but He can have more of us.
Ephesians 4.30 – Grieve not the Holy Spirit.
Thessalonians I.19 The Spirit does not depart, but we may lose the sense of His presence.
