This week I’m going to share my experience of speaking in tongues.
Bear with me, as I know that not everyone speaks in tongues, or has to, or even believes in it, but for me, it was a dramatic part of my experience in the Lord.
As I have mentioned in earlier blogs, speaking in tongues for me, did not happen at baptism either in water or in baptism in the Holy Spirit, even though someone did try to pray for me at the time!
I believe that God is in control, as we worship and surrender to Him and our progress and distribution of the gifts is completely up to Him.
For me it is a personal gift of expressing worship to Him and sometimes used at times of spiritual warfare, when feeling under attack.
I was baptized in the Spirit just after Easter 1994, but I did not experience speaking in tongues until about July.
It was not something that I had tried to “develop” or even really sought, as I don’t even think that it is actually possible, or right to work anything up, but it has to come from the Lord.
It just came out of my naturally worshipping the Lord.
One day in July, I was at a Saturday night church meeting and we were having a worship time and worshipping God.
Just at that time I felt what I could describe as an explosion of worship and communion with God and it felt as though a spring of water had suddenly gushed up from within me and exploded, much like a cork being popped from a champagne bottle.
Then praise just poured out of me and I began speaking in tongues.
The Bible says, “Out of your heart shall flow rivers of living water.”
This was exactly my experience.
A few months after this I spoke to another Christian from another church who did not believe in speaking in tongues and during our church meeting I had a picture at church of fires of revival burning throughout the city, but then fire engines came and put out the fires.
We need to be careful not to quench the Holy Spirit with our opinions.
